On June 21, the Canada Summer Games host society and First Nations members of Treaty 1 and Treaty 3 and the Manitoba Métis Federation held water and fire ceremonies at the Bannock Point Petroforms in Whiteshell Provincial Park. Eight Indigenous youth carried the fire and water down Memorial Boulevard to light the Centennial Flame. (Danielle Da Silva – Sou’wester).

A sacred fire was carried 150 kilometres west from Manitou Api to light the Centennial Flame on Memorial Boulevard.

DANIELLE DA SILVA – SOU’WESTER Elder Dave Courchene Jr., who in 1967 carried the torch in the last leg of the relay at the Pan Am Games but was not permitted into Winnipeg Stadium, lit the Centennial Flame on June 21.

Following the lighting, a ceremony was held in the Manitoba Legislative Building meant to reconnect the building to the land it stands on.
