The family of the late Elder Dr. Dave Courchene wish to express their thanks and gratitude for the outpouring of support through emails, messages, phone calls, donations and kind words.  As per Elder Dave’s request, his family had a private burial and he is now at rest beside his life-long partner Orianna.

We kindly ask for your understanding to allow a period of grieving for the family. Turtle Lodge gatherings and Ceremonies will be paused for this short period. Elder Dave entrusted his son David Courchene III (Sabe) with the work of the Turtle Lodge and its continued existence. Sabe has pledged to continue to help lead the Ceremonies and work of the Turtle Lodge alongside the National Turtle Lodge Council of Elders and Knowledge Keepers. Notices of future gatherings, Ceremonies and meetings will be communicated when timing is appropriate. Rest assured, we will continue the Vision.

I will not forget this Great Warrior. When I think of him
“don’t waste your time in protest, bring them to our sacred lodges” comes to mind. He, along with his family have helped me in ways I can’t even explain. I will be forever grateful for him ,his family , and the Turtle Lodge. Also, to my ceremony and Sundance family, you will be always in my heart. I hope to be there, when the ancestors come to visit the sacred sites across Turtle Island, to welcome them. This is why we need to protect our Mother so when our time comes to make our final journey we will have these places, like the Turtle Lodges, to come home to when we visit.

Dr. Courchene was a kind, thoughtful and brilliant man, and a key member of the Reconciling Ways of Knowing group. We all miss him and his wisdom greatly. We send our deepest condolences to his family, and are heartened to know that Sabe, David Courchene III, will continue the important and beautiful work of Turtle Lodge.
