BROKENHEAD – On July 2, 2015, 5 Elders from various language groups were honoured by the Manitoba First Nation Education Resource Centre (MFNERC) for their work in advancing the culture and languages.  The following Elders were honoured:

Doris Pratt (Sioux Valley Dakota Nation)

Victor Harper (St. Theresa Point First Nation)

Emma Harper (St. Theresa Point First Nation)

Fred Denechezhe (Lac Brochet – Northlands Dene First Nation)

Catherine Moise (Lac Brochet – Northlands Dene First Nation)

Elder Dave Courchene was invited by MFNERC to conduct the honour ceremony, in which blankets were wrapped around each of the Elders honoured.  Elder Courchene stated, “The blankets carry the spirit of the honour of being recognized for the work they have done for the people, and the memory of that work.  The blanket is filled with the spirit to look after them, to take care of them.  It becomes a healing blanket.”
